In 1911 Lord Baden-Powell began training Scouting’s adult leaders by organizing a series of lectures. In 1919, these lectures became the basis for Wood Badge.
The primary purpose of Wood Badge has always been to strengthen Scouting in our units, districts, and local councils.
Since 1919, Wood Badge has continued to evolve to meet Scouting’s needs. Wood Badge has been developed for Cub Scout, Boy Scout, Varsity Team, Explorer Post and Venturing Crew leaders, as well as council and district level volunteers. Its focus is on leadership, rather than outdoor skills.
The first weekend includes presentations and activities that simulate a boy’s transition from the 5th Grade Webelos Scout program to a Boy Scout Troop. It focuses on three weeks of troop meetings and activities. The second weekend parallels a Scout troop’s method and structure for an exciting and challenging weekend campout experience.
Many employers recognize the benefits of their employees participating in leadership programs like Wood Badge. Check with your employer to see if tuition assistance or reimbursement funds are available for individual pursuit of life-education or personal achievement training.
Check with your unit or your chartered organization. If they can see the value in this training for the unit and ultimately the youth in your unit, they may assist you.
If you still need some financial assistance, scholarships may be available. Contact the course director or the Wood Badge Coordinator listed. Click here for Scholarship Application
