Pinewood Derby
One of our iconic events
Often when people think of the Boy Scouts, they think of the Pinewood Derby. It’s one of our iconic events with Cub Scouts gathering across cities and regions to race small, driverless wooden cars down a sloped track. The cars are powered only by gravity. The Pinewood Derby is a great way for the Scouts to learn about physics and engineering, as they have to design and build their own cars. It is also a lot of fun, and the Scouts always enjoy taking part in it.
Each Cub Scout is provided with a kit that includes a wooden block, plastic wheels, and metal axles. With an adult’s help, they are challenged to create a completely unique car. Trophies or medals are often awarded for the fastest car and the best designs.
