Outdoor Training Sessions

The Ozark Trails Council will be holding sessions of each of the below outdoor training opportunities per year. The training will be held on a rotating around the council. If you are interested in helping with one or more of these events, please contact the your District Training Chair or the Springfield Service Center.

Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation (BALOO)
is a Cub Scout Leader training. It is a one-day training event that introduces parents and leaders to the skills needed to plan and conduct Pack outdoor activities including camping. This training is required for any adult who is in charge of planning a Pack campout, and it is recommended that one adult per pack complete BALOO training.

Webelos Leader Outdoor Training (WLOT) is designed specifically for Webelos den leaders and their assistants. Webelos Leader Outdoor Training teaches outdoor skills through demonstration and hands-on practice. It also prepares the leader to conduct Webelos overnight camping with the boys and parents of the den. In addition to covering basic camping skills, this training features planning campouts and finding resources.

Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (OLST)
is a Boy Scout leader training that is required for Scoutmasters and Assistants to complete their basic training. It is a fun-filled program of hands-on skills training in the outdoors, designed to help you master basic camp skills required for Tenderfoot to First Class. Instructors will help you learn how to set up camp, cook, work with woods tools and about ropes, first aid and other basic outdoor skills. It will increase your comfort level and give you confidence as a trained, skilled leader.

National Youth Leadership Training (NYLT)

All Scouts who are or want to be a leader - mark your calendars for June 6-11, 2010 at Camp Childress.

National Youth Leadership Training is an exciting, action-packed program designed for councils to provide youth members with leadership skills and experience they can use in their home troops and in other situations demanding leadership of self and others.

The NYLT course centers around the concepts of what a leader must BE, what he must KNOW, and what he must DO. The key elements are then taught with a clear focus on HOW TO. The skills come alive during the week as the patrol goes on a Quest for the Meaning of Leadership.

Woodbadge 2010

Mark your calendars for August 27-29 and September 17-19, 2010. Click below for the information brochure and sign up form.

What is Woodbadge: In 1911, Lord Baden-Powell began training Scouting's adult leaders by organizing a series of lectures. In 1919, these lectures became the basis of Woodbadge. The primary purpose of Woodbadge has always been to strengthen Scouting in our units, districts, and local councils. Woodbadge for the 21st Century has been developed for Cub Scout, Boy Scouts, Varsity, Exploring, and Venturing leaders, as well as district and council level volunteers. Its focus is on leadership skills rather than outdoor skills. It has become one of the highest level of Scout leader training offered in local councils.
